An Inverness man who punched his heavily pregnant partner has been banned from seeing or contacting her for three years.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that Zachary Williams (19) battered the 28-week pregnant woman on January 21 this year at a property in the city's Urchal Park.

Williams appeared from custody for sentencing at the court having pled guilty last month.

Defence agent David Patterson said his client had "no excuse" for the assault which involved pushing her, punching her in the face, seizing and compressing her neck and punching her to the body to her injury and danger of life.

Sheriff Eilidh MacDonald said: "Do you know how serious this is? You could have killed her."

However the sheriff said given William's age he "still had the capacity to change".

Williams also admitted sending threatening text messages to the woman on August 1 this year.

As a direct alternative to custody the sheriff imposed a community payback order.

Williams, of Golf view Road, will be under the supervision of social workers for three years.

He also has to take part in a programme to educate domestic abusers and carry out 225 hours of unpaid work in the community.

A non-harrassment order will run for three years.
