Bargain shop Poundland has shut its store at Inverness Shopping Park with immediate effect after the firm’s lease expired.

And a top Scottish economist has warned that the closure of big-name shops may not be over for the Highland capital yet.

The Poundland store closed last Saturday with the next nearest one being in the city’s High Street.

It is believed that a new outlet may be opening in the city’s Telford retail park later in the year.

A spokesman for Poundland said: “It goes without saying that when we have to close a store we always work hard to look after colleagues directly affected.”

It is believed that the new store may allow the company to offer a larger range of stock.

Inverness-based economist Tony Mackay warned the pandemic and cost of living hike is likely to have a lasting effect on high streets. “The retail industry has had two bad years because of the impact of the pandemic, particularly the move to working from home. It is not surprising that various shops in Inverness have closed.

“The worst of the pandemic may now be over. However, it may be some time before there’s a

noticeable rise in retail spending.”
