Pothole fears for annual cycle race

CYCLISTS tearing round the 66-mile Etape Loch Ness route could be in for catastrophe when they reach the pothole-riddled A82, it has been claimed.

Stephen Williams, of Highland Cycles, said its poor condition meant it was dangerous for cyclists and drivers.

And event organiser Caledonian Concepts admitted the road was "not in great condition at the moment".

However, it is confident Bear Scotland will address any issues ahead of the April 29 event, which could be tackled by more than 5000 cyclists and boost the local economy by £1 million.

Bear Scotland has promised to inspect the A82 stretch of the race with the help of event organisers and carry out any necessary improvements.

Highland Council, which is responsible for roads which run along the south side of the loch and through Inverness, made no promise to inspect and repair the route ahead of the event.

"We cannot give a specific pledge," a council spokeswoman said.
