Schools across the region have asked parents to wait until tomorrow, Tuesday, to hear plans for the return of pupils after the festive break.

In a message from the Inverness area education officer, parents are asked to wait until a letter is sent home tomorrow – in light of first minister Nicola Sturgeon's further coronavirus restrictions announced at the weekend to extend the Christmas holiday period for many children in January.

A Highland Council area education officer said: "As you know, the First Minister announced at the weekend that there will be some changes to the way schools return after the Christmas break.

"Tomorrow, Tuesday December 22, a letter will be issued to all parents and carers of children and young people in Highland schools to give you the key information about this.

"Please do not contact the school today about the new arrangements, to allow school leaders and staff to focus on planning for the new term."

On Saturday, Ms Sturgeon said schools will continue to open as normal until the start of the Christmas break, with the holiday being extended until January 11 for most pupils.

Online learning will resume for at least the first week of term, although schools will be open for the most vulnerable and children of key workers.
