A 45-YEAR-OLD Inverness man with three previous convictions for alcohol-related driving offences has had sentence deferred for a background report.

However, Simon Aird, of Tern Avenue, was told by Sheriff Robert Frazer that he was not considering a custodial sentence.

The sheriff added that he feared there was a problem which had to be addressed.

Defence solicitor John MacColl confirmed his client had “difficulties with alcohol” after Aird admitted being drunk in charge of his vehicle.

The offence occurred in the Inshes retail park on February 5 near the McDonald’s restaurant.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told that police had been called to investigate Aird, who was seen in his car at about 12.15am.

Fiscal depute Karen Poke said: “When officers opened the door, there was a smell of alcohol, he was slurring his words and was unsteady on his feet.”

Aird will return for sentencing on April 14.
