Officers went to Glen Urquhart High School in Drumnadrochit on Wednesday to make inquiries about an online message understood to have been threatening in its tone.

Police would not go into details but it is believed the post was a prank.

Despite speculation among locals that armed police had gone to the scene, a spokesman for Police Scotland denied this was the case and said ordinary divisional officers had attended.

“Police Scotland attended at a school in the Drumnadrochit area on Wednesday in connection with concerns raised about a post made on social media,” he said.

“Appropriate advice has been offered to those involved and there was no wider risk to the public or the school community.”

There were also rumours that the school, which has more than 200 pupils from the Drumnadrochit, Tomich, Cannich and Invermoriston areas, went into lockdown.

But Highland Council stressed that was not the case.

“We are aware of an incident involving a Glen Urquhart High School student,” a spokeswoman said. “Police Scotland is currently investigating the matter.

“Therefore, we are unable to comment further.”

The school put its own post on social media on Wednesday night acknowledging concerns had been raised about an “inappropriate” post made by a Glen Urquhart High School student.

It said anyone with information should report directly to the police, or to the head teacher and teaching staff.
