A plumber has admitted being in charge of a vehicle while more than seven and half times over the legal limit for cocaine.

John Beaton (29) was stopped by police on the A9 between the Longman roundabout and the Raigmore interchange by officers on routine patrol.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told that he had been pulled over in relation to another matter but officers decided to breathalyse him and do a drugs test.

He tested negative for alcohol but the drugs test showed he had 389 micrograms of cocaine metabolites per litre of blood.

The legal limit is 50 micrograms.

Defence agent John MacColl said Beaton, of Forester's Way, Inverness, had taken the class A drug "two to three days" prior to being stopped by the police on February 25 last year.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined him £1000 and endorsed his driving licence with 10 penalty points.
