Veterans took on a teaching role two days running to give pupils from an Inverness primary school an insight into a city war memorial which will be 100 years old this year.
Pupils from Holm Primary School joined members of the Inverness branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS) at the memorial in Cavell Gardens, Ness Bank.
Originally unveiled on December 16, 1922 in front of a crowd of 5000, the red sandstone Celtic cross commemorates the dead of both world wars.
Bart Lucas, chairman of the Inverness RBLS branch, said the visits – which involved 100 children – had been arranged as part of a project the pupils had been doing.
“We told them about the history of the memorial,” Mr Lucas said.
“They seemed very interested in it.”
World War I had a devastating impact on the Highlands which sustained one of the highest per capita casualty rates in Europe. It is estimated that one out of seven men in Inverness parish died in the conflict.
