The Proclaimers sold out Inverness Leisure with a packed set of hits and new songs

Inverness was date 53 on The Proclaimers huge tour through 2022 – but neither the Reid twins nor the crowd showed any sign of flagging through the value-for-money set at Inverness Leisure on Thursday night.

The sell-out crowd turned out at Inverness Leisure to see the group celebrate what is now an almost 40-year career with a set of classic favourites and new songs.

In powerful singalong voice, the audience were spectacular in I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) which ended the main set – and also a roof-raising go at the twins’ hymn to Scottish independence, Sunshine On Leith.

Talking of Leith, Leither Ross Wilson, who performs as Blue Rose Code, made a great choice as support act with his feisty, upbeat and warm-hearted presence.

He opened his set with Grateful – often where his sets end – his tongue-in-cheek love song – “I’ll never be cool, I’ll never be good-looking, I’ll never be rich, But Lord I’m grateful’.

And he treated us to Sandaig, a boat trip name-checking north locations: “Arisaig to Torridon” as he cuts the boat engine “to hear the Highlands breathe” and the “roar of freedom all the way along the West Coast”.

It set the pace for The Proclaimers’ set, relentless and pushing on, just the odd break to read out a request.

Anyone who thinks the Reids are mellowing in their 60th year should take a look at the lyrics of their latest album, Dentures Out.

Highlight? Sunshine On Leith with a stunning violin solo from Erica Nockalls.

The twins made us wait for our encore, the cheer huge when they returned, still giving it everything!
