NAIRN’S Really Garlicky Company has become the first-ever winner in a brand new category at the Highlands and Islands Food and Drink Awards (HIFAD).

The family-owned business, which is the only UK producer of Porcelain garlic, won the new primary agricultural producer award, celebrating farmers, crofters and all primary agricultural producers who have also been involved in developing a food or drink product beyond the farm gate.

The firm was among 17 title winners at the awards dinner and ceremony held at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness on Friday and hosted by STV presenter Jennifer Reoch.

Winners came from as far afield as Speyside, the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland, home to cook, author and chairwoman of the Shetland Food and Drink Association, Marian Armitage, who was named HIFAD ambassador of the year.

Among the more local winners were Beauly’s Corner of the Square café and delicatessen, winner of the independent food and drink retailer award, Loch Ness Absinthe, who collected the excellence award, and the Kale Yard at Boath, Auldearn, the 2019 best eatery winner.

Penny Ellis, who is a member of the award’s steering group and owner of Knockomie Hotel, said: “The HIFADs continue to demonstrate the commitment, dedication and inspirational entrepreneurship that is flourishing in an economy that faces numerous challenges.”
