A SPECIAL day of celebration in memory of a Strictly Inverness dancer’s late father brought people flocking to the event last weekend– and helped to raise cash for a Highland charity.

Celebrating Charlie, which was held in Inverness on Saturday, was organised by Rachel Lucas (24) to honour her father’s life and to also give friends and family a chance to give him a rousing send-off. Charlie passed away in the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic after being diagnosed with bowel cancer, and the restrictions on gatherings at the time meant that a funeral attended by all friends and family was not possible.

Saturday’s celebration, which took place at the Raigmore Motel, was designed to remedy that and give Charlie the celebration he deserved.

The day, which saw friends and family travel from far and wide, also provided a chance to raise vital funds towards Rachel’s Strictly Inverness target in aid of the Highland Hospice.

The celebration kicked off with a darts contest during the afternoon, before a special evening party and music from The Shire entertained people until late into the night.

And the celebration is likely to have been a big success – it had already raised around £700 before it even got under way.

Whatever the final total is, it will be added to Rachel’s wider fundraising for Strictly Inverness. She was already up to about £4500 before the celebration, and looks set to sail past her £5000 participation target following the weekend’s celebrations.
