POSTBOXES in Nairnshire were given a splash of extra colour for Easter weekend, with Yarnbombers Nairn again showing off the sheer skill and joy of their creative force with the Easter Postbox Topper’s Trail.

Caroline Mackay, who started the trend, said: “It all stemmed from Covid time and my daughters sending me links to various activities to try and keep me focused and busy. In came a link to Postbox Topper’s and Yarnbombers UK. I really didn’t think I was good enough, but one night I went out at stupid o’clock and measured a round postbox.

“At this time it was all done secretly and very clandestine, wondering if I would be caught!

“Originally, I only planned to make one – Tradespark Co-op for Remembrance – but this progressed to three Postbox Topper’s for Remembrance day.

“A seed was sown and it quickly grew as I then decided to try and make something for Christmas to fit all 13 postboxes in Nairn.

“Out I went again at a very late hour to measure the different sizes of Postboxes.

“The first Christmas was amazing as the feedback came thick and fast while everyone was in the dark about the crafter. Needless to say, I quickly realised that it was becoming expected to have creations out again for Easter. It was at this time I knew I would need to try and gather a team together to help if the project was to continue.

“On my first request for help I was lucky to have four people offer their help. Over the last year or so this has grown to about 10 and our postbox toppers are now 17 in number covering Nairn, Auldearn, Cawdor, Brackla and Piperhill.

“There are some wonderfully talented people and we are so lucky to have them give their time, talent and even cost to continue with the Yarnbombers Nairn Postbox Toppers’ Trail.

“Many have asked if we accept donations and we are fortunate that the local Nairn Wool Shop has agreed to accept donations on our behalf.

“We do Easter/Remembrance/Christmas and as a group we also agreed to do one other localised theme each year. Last year it was the Book and Arts Festival and this year, on May 20, we will be putting up postbox toppers on behalf of the 115th year anniversary for 1st Nairn Scouts.

“It has really become quite a talking point as we people love to share the photos with family and friends near and far. I have been overwhelmed with how this project has progressed and enjoyed by so many. Yarnbombers Nairn are an amazing team who have risen from the ashes of a pandemic to spread joy and cheer with their creations.”

The Yarnbombers Nairn team consists of Ann Forsyth, Morag Anderson, Kirsty Brown, Barbara Hartwell, Rona Harvey, Heather Forbes, Sharon Robertson, Carol Willox, Liz le Broq, with assistance from Nairn Wool Shop.
