STUDENTS at Inverness College UHI got to develop connections with local businesses at a special “re-freshers fair” last week.

More than 200 students took advantage of the event to make connections with a wide range of businesses, and city groups, as well as meet each other, join clubs... and pick up a few voucher goodies.

Those in attendance ranged from the charity Mikeysline to High Life Highland, and from the army to The Inverness Courier’s parent company, Highland News and Media.

William Campbell, the Highlands and Islands Students’ Association (HISA) president for UHI Inverness, was delighted with how well the day went.

“It’s gone really well,” he said. “It’s a little bit more of a scaled down event, rather than our standard freshers [fair] in September, it’s our ‘re-freshers’, so for students who started in January who do part-time courses or night courses or one day a week.

“I think it’s really good for them to experience freshers like everyone else did in September.

“We’ve probably seen about 200-odd students which is really good. Thursdays and Fridays are usually our quieter days on campus, so it was really good to see some students as well who maybe weren’t studying today but study earlier in the week and they’ve come along to the event, which is really fantastic.”

Heather Innes, HISA’s regional president, added: “It was lovely to see so many students come down and be really interested in the stalls we had out. Lovely engagement with students. They were really interested to see what we had.”

She added: “A big thing for us coming out of the pandemic, and we’re well out of it now, is building back up communities and people meeting people. Students didn’t get to meet each other for so long. I think now it’s a bit ‘oh, how do I meet people when I come to university or college?’ and providing social opportunities, and gyms and clubs so they can go and join is going to be a big part of building back up that UHI community.”
