HUNDREDS of colourful runners are believed to have raised more than £100,000 for cancer research after taking to the streets of Inverness this morning.

Cancer Research UK's latest Race for Life took place in the Highland capital on Sunday.

And organisers were hopeful of a huge charity windfall, with the 883 people taking part in this year's races expected to raise £116,550 once all of their donations are collected.

The day saw runners of all ages and abilities tackle either a 10k or a 5k option.

Lisa Adams, Cancer Research UK’s spokeswoman in Scotland, said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part in Race for Life Inverness.

“Life-saving research is being funded right now thanks to our supporters who fundraise.

"The atmosphere at Race for Life Inverness was hugely moving – full of emotion, courage, tears and laughter as people celebrated the lives of those dear to them who have survived cancer and remembered loved ones lost to the disease.

“Now we’re asking everyone who took part to return the money they’re raised as soon as possible. Funds raised – whether it’s £10 or £100 – will help scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, helping save more lives.”

Inverness's Race for Life is one of numerous such events held across the country by Cancer Research UK, with another in Kirkcaldy, Fife, being held on the very same day to raise vital funds for the charity.

The various events feature an inspiring series of 3k, 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research.

Race for Life has raised more than £940 million towards life-saving research since it began 30 years ago. And in that time more than 10 million participants have taken part.

The next Scottish events are in Glasgow on May 21, and Edinburgh on June 4, but there are many more in the coming weeks – both in Scotland and across the rest of the UK.
