A royal baton which the King presented to the Boys’ Brigade & Girls’ Association reached Nairn last weekend as part of a North of Scotland relay.

His Majesty presented the north Scottish area president of the group with the baton at the Braemar Gathering last September, and it is now being passed on across branches in the region.

Last weekend Nairn members represented the Highland Battalion, receiving the baton from Moray Battalion at Brodie Castle.

It comes as the The Boys’ Brigade marks its 140th anniversary.

BB Highland secretary Michael MacAulay said: “It was great to join in the 140 Baton Celebrations with the 1st Nairn and walking the last mile to the church with the leaders and young people.

“The team at 1st Nairn put on a great weekend to kick off the baton’s journey around the Highlands.”

After the handover the group walked the baton to Nairn, with participants divided into groups to share the miles.

On the Sunday, the group met at Nairn Old Parish Church for the opening of the baton, which contains a message from the King for the young members of the group.

The baton was last used in 1983 to celebrate the BB’s centenary.

In total it will visit 50 companies, travelling mostly by foot but also by boat and air.

The baton will travel around the north Scottish area, principally on foot but also by boat and air visiting companies in the battalions of Aberdeen, Buchan, Banffshire, Moray, Highland, Orkney and Stornoway, where The King’s message will be read to Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Association members. It will also visit community centres and landmarks.
