HIGHLANDERS have added their voices to global calls for action on the climate to mark World Earth Day.

Earth Day is an annual event which has taken place every April 22 for 53 years – and has grown so much that today more than a billion people in 193 different countries hold co-ordinated activities aimed at highlighting the need for environmental protections.

The theme this year is 'Invest in Our Planet' and climate activists held a rally in the heart of Inverness on Saturday afternoon to show their support.

A number of Highlanders also travelled to London for a major protest highlighting the dangers of a warming world and need for urgent action.

The London rally, dubbed the “Big One”, is aiming to get 100,000 people protesting outside Parliament.

It is being held in the wake of the publication of a new UN report, which saw top scientists deliver a “final warning” on the climate crisis stating that the world needs to act now or it’s going to be too late.

The Big One is expected to be attended by representatives from more than 200 organisations such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth – with famous speakers such as Stephen Fry, Chris Packham and Caroline Lucas among those set to address the crowds.
