PICTURES: Rail services almost back to normal in Far North after gas leak in Inverness
Rail services in the far north were almost fully back to normal tonight after a gas leak at the rail depot in Inverness earlier brought major disruption to the city and the region's trains.
At the time of writing, the only service still suffering knock on delays from the earlier incident, was the 4pm Wick to Inverness train, which was almost 25 minutes late due to knock-on effects caused to earlier journeys as a result of the gas leak.
It was originally due to arrive into the Highland capital at 8.14pm, but was still 25 minutes late when it left Ardgay at 7.16pm.
Meanwhile, the police have thanked the public for their “patience and understanding” following the earlier incident.
Police had been made aware of a gas leak from a train near to Millburn Road in Inverness at around 10.25am on Tuesday.
Emergency services attended, and numerous buildings and roads were closed as a safety precaution - including Inverness Railway Station, the Eastgate Centre and Morrisons supermarket. Academy Street and Millburn Road were also closed to through traffic before everything reopened around 1.20pm.
Speaking shortly after 2pm, Chief Inspector Judy Hill, area commander, said: “We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding as we worked alongside partners to ensure the area was made safe.”
