More than 150 people turned out in Inverness at the weekend to protest against government coronavirus restrictions.

Flouting the rules on gatherings, speakers and participants gathered in Falcon Square on Sunday at noon.

The event was held to show the strength of feeling against issues such as business trading restrictions and the wearing of face masks.

Placards demanded the resignation of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. While other banners mocked the preventative measures put in place by both the UK and Scottish governments.

Organised by Saving Scotland Together, a spokesman said the group was pleased with the turnout but that there was much still to be done to shift public opinion.

The spokesman from Inverness, who did not want to be named, said: “The protest came about because people are fed up at the lack of services, reduced NHS care and the disproportionate rise in suicides in the country.

“Children are being harmed by these restrictions.

“The virus is not killing greater numbers of people now, and it should be up to people to make decisions about what they want to do.”

He continued: “People’s lives are being damaged with all the measures in place to help stop the spread of this virus, and yet nothing is in place for similar illnesses. Surely we should all be allowed to make our own decisions. We know the risks and we should make our own decisions. We do not need to live in this way any longer.

“All we want is for life to go on. Let people make their own decisions.”
