The centre, which is being seen as internationally significant, is a collaboration between Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI).
The building forms part of a wider project with the NHS National Treatment Centre – Highland at the campus which opened to patients this week.
During her visit, Princess Anne heard about pioneering work already being carried in fields such as medical nanotechnology.
It includes the development of antiviral and antimicrobial surface coatings which have the potential to be used on surgical instruments, replacement joints and medical implants such as heart pacemakers and reduce the risk of infection and to last longer.
The first tenant in the new building was medical device consultancy iDE8.

The company’s managing director, David Howarth, has a personal connection to the project.
His father, Dr Jeff Howarth of UHI, who passed away in 2022, was a key member of the joint team who developed the concept for the centre and oversaw its construction.
