Bird's-eye views of how Inverness Castle will look following its multimillion-pound transformation have been revealed in newly-released images.

The artist’s illustrations depict a new roof terrace on the building, which is being developed as a gateway tourist attraction celebrating the spirit of the Highlands.

The terrace will give views across to the River Ness and the Flora Macdonald statue immediately in front of the castle.

The images join a collection of previously-released external and internal impressions by LDN Architects, which is involved in the project.

Until March 2020, the castle was occupied by the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service which has relocated to a new justice centre in Longman Road.

Enabling work including checks for asbestos, timber preservation and the building structure is being carried out in advance of the main contract.

Planned new features include a single-storey building to link the two towers of the castle and a new access to a river terrace on the castle’s west side.

An original well, dating from an earlier castle on the site destroyed in 1746, is to be preserved and incorporated into the new part of the building.

Project director Fiona Hampton said: "The statutory applications covering the planned works to be undertaken during the main building works contract were submitted earlier this year.

"The planning process is ongoing and we await a decision from the planners in preparation for the issue of the main construction tender later this year.

"The applications cover the works necessary to restore the Category A-listed building and convert it for use as a new visitor attraction.

"The proposed works include a new restaurant and café area, retailing outlets, internal interpretation spaces and external viewing and performance terraces that will transform Inverness Castle into an experience for everyone to enjoy."

Earlier this year, the castle’s front door was revealed for the first time in almost 50 years.

The former entrance lobby was also reopened to the large ceremonial staircase behind, reinstating the dramatic original entrance that the building once enjoyed.

The castle’s transformation is supported by a £15 million Scottish Government and £3 million UK government investment through the city-region deal.

It aims to create a "must-see" attraction, contributing to reinvigoration of tourism across the area.
