PICTURES: Highland and Moray pupils take STEM test

Potential future engineers and scientists from Inverness and Easter Ross were among the prize-winners at the Highland Celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
The event, before the coronavirus lockdown, brought 90 young people representing 14 schools from the Highlands, Moray and Western Isles to Eden Court in Inverness.
Organised by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry’s Young Engineers and Science Clubs (YESC), the programme was sponsored by Bristow Helicopters, with air crew personnel giving a lunchtime talk on their search and rescue work.
The pupils were judged on ongoing projects for the club of the year titles, with Sgoil Bhreascleit from the Isle of Lewis winning the primary school category and Millburn Academy in Inverness taking the secondary school title, while the newcomers award for best new club went to Newmore Primary in Invergordon.
Millburn Academy picked up a second award for the hands-on STEM challenge with a second Invergodon school, Park Primary, scooping the primary award.
The event also hosted the regional heat of Charge! – the SCDI’s 2020 national STEM challenge supported by Scottish Power.
This challenged the teams to build an electric lorry to carry cargo between charging stations. Avoch Primary and Charleston Academy produced the winning designs.
Captain Guy Holmes said: “The Bristow Helicopter team were very impressed with the aptitude and problem-solving skills displayed by all of the school teams.”
