It is a building already renowned for visual splendour within historic walls that have welcomed Inverness congregations for more than 150 years.

From tomorrow (Friday), Inverness Cathedral will become just that little bit more beautiful.

A special flower festival will be held at the place of worship by the River Ness from tomorrow morning (May 24) until Sunday evening (May 26).

Entitled ‘For the beauty of the earth’, floral displays were brought together by the church’s very own “flower fairies” and other volunteers.

They feature displays from around the local community and beyond, with the event, open to all, culminating in a choral evensong at 5.30pm on Sunday.

In 2019, local people and those connected to the cathedral celebrated 150 years of the building being completed.

Five years on, celebrations have turned to marking the 150th anniversary of the cathedral being consecrated.

Cathedral volunteer Win Macdonald said: “We are four flower fairies who meet every Friday to arrange the flowers in the cathedral and, for the festival we have four more enlisted.

“Given that it is the 150th anniversary of the cathedral, we were initially asked if we would create a flower festival to be thrown to the whole diocese of the north episcopal church.

“That didn’t come together, but we decided we would go ahead with it, still.

“There are eight of us in all who will be arranging the flowers, and the theme we are basing it on is ‘the beauty of the earth’.

“It won’t be terribly ambitious, but it will hopefully be something that people from throughout the community can come and enjoy.”

As well as individual locals and visitors, community groups, churches and all other organisations are welcome to make the most of the event.
