An Inverness resident is hoping he can find a good home for an array of wartime items uncovered while he was doing a spot of DIY.

Electrician Shayne MacDonald moved into his home in the Crown area of Inverness last March, but it was only when he ventured into the loft this month, to fit up some down lights, that he uncovered the unusual haul.

As well as a World War II gas mask he also discovered a bag with the year 1941 printed on it, a field dressing and tubes of anti-gas ointment.

The 34-year-old, currently working on the refurbishment of the Victorian Market in Inverness city centre, says he is a bit of a history fan, but was “shocked” at the find in the Broadstone Park property, which dates back to 1901.

“I was lifting some insulation out of the way and I saw it in the corner,” he explained of how he discovered the gas mask first.

The bag and other items were subsequently uncovered elsewhere in the loft.

“My wife, Julie, said to see if the museum would be interested,” he said.

“Or it could be donated somewhere else suitable in Inverness.”

He said he had resisted the urge to try wearing the gas mask himself.

“I was tempted to but I wasn’t sure,” he said.

“It is in perfect condition.”
