PICTURES: BMW on fire on A9 near Inverness

A car fire has closed part of the A9 near Inverness with huge tailbacks reported.

Flames and smoke were seen billowing from a grey BMW on the northbound carriageway near the Longman landfill site a short time ago.

Traffic has reportedly ground to a standstill with police in attendance.

It is not yet known if anyone has been hurt.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman confirmed one car was involved and said two fire appliances were in attendance after the alarm was raised at 11.53 am.

Police Scotland said they were assisting with traffic management, with tailbacks reported as far away as Culloden roundabout on the A96.
