One vehicle owner affected, Yvonne Smith, said this afternoon when the Courier went to investigate the scene that she had been unaware of what had happened until a picture of her car appeared online.

"I parked my car here last night," she said.

"When I saw the pictures in the news and realised that was my car, I really wished it was just my imagination, but unfortunately it wasn't."

She arrived at the car park to find the rear and one front window completely destroyed, as well as a wing mirror and damage to the windscreen and dents in the side of the car.

"We have been parking here for two or three years and never had problems," she said. "Now we'll be looking at somewhere else where to park.

"I don't think anything is missing from inside my car, but I spoke to one of the other car owners who said around £800 of fishing equipment was stolen from his vehicle."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.15am on Monday, officers received a report of damage to a number of vehicles on Riverside Street, Inverness.
