PICTURES: Sun shines over Glenurquhart Highland Gathering and Games

THE sun shone over a popular Highland gathering near Loch Ness as the event was back for its 75th anniversary.

The Glenurquhart Highland Games were back in force at the weekend with a big crowd enjoying the day.

This was the first times the game took place after the pandemic.

Chair of the games’ committee, Russell Fraser, said they were delighted to have people back and be able to host the event.

“We really had a great day, everyone seemed to have a great time,” he said.

“We had a fantastic weather and it was one of the best days of this summer. Overall it was a great success.

“The crowd was really good as well and we some records broken on the day”

Scott Hutchison from Oregon broke the weight over the bar record at 4.445m, previously set in 1996 by Jim Wethenhall (USA) at 4.42m, as well as weight for distance scored at 25.3m beating the 23.82 record set in 1997 by Hamish Davidson.

Colin Baillie and Josie Mackenzie, who have been part of the Games for 50 and 46 years respectively, were recognsed for their work as they decided to stand down.

Mr Fraser added: “This year the goal was really on coming back after COVID and make sure that the games were up and running. We are currently trying to recruit more volunteers but this year we are really delighted with the result."

This year saw five ladies entering the heavy competition, with the category being introduced before lock down.

The Glenurquhart Ladies Tug of war team took part to the competitions.

Cheryl Heggie Highland Dancers were at the games for the first time to complement the Elizabeth Fraser School of Dancing.
