DOZENS of bin bags full of rubbish have been removed from public spaces in an Inverness neighbourhood by community-spirited residents.

Forty-six bags of rubbish were collected and removed when people of all ages gathered in Smithton for a community clean-up effort on Saturday.

Organised by Smithton Residents' Association, dozens of people flocked to the field next to Smithton Primary to begin their clean-up work.

And the clean-up was a true cross-community effort, with Smithton residents joined by the 3rd Inverness (Crown) Cubs to carry out the work.

"The clean up in Smithton was a great success," said a spokeswoman for the residents' association. "Altogether we collected 46 bin bags and some other stuff that easily filled up a van.

"We had people living in Smithton helping us but also a group from 3rd Inverness (Crown) Cubs. They worked very hard to collect as much as they could and also work for their environment badges.

"Smithton Residents' Association would like to thank everyone who came and helped. It was fantastic teamwork."

Among the items picked up and removed were bottles, cans, money, underwear, hats, shoes and car hub cabs.

The weekend's clean-up is not the only community-led event the association has in the pipeline. They are also planning a celebration in the Smithton Hotel to mark King Charles III's coronation on May 6.
