THE forest walk and cycle trails at Abriachan in the hills above Loch Ness have been given a makeover to repair damage largely brought about by their popularity.

Abriachan Forest Trust (AFT) successfully applied to Highland Council for planning permission to carry out repairs including resurfacing and drainage, and the formation of short new sections where repair was impossible.

Chairman of AFT’s board of trustees Marco Baglioni said the trails were used by “vast” numbers of visitors and this had increased during the pandemic.

The trails are on the 540 hectares of AFT land where the aim is forest management and regeneration with native species, as well as to provide access to people seeking recreation, education or improved health through exercise.

Cycle trails and walking routes are kept apart, and a feature included in the facelift is a cycle track for off-road beginners.

For those wanting to sit and enjoy the peace, five new wooden benches have been installed. Part of the Great Glen Way route goes through the forest, and moving it higher up the hillside is being considered to gave walkers better vantage points.
