UNLOCKING revenue from the untapped outdoor adventure market was the key theme of the Highland Tourism Conference at The Drumossie Hotel this week.

More than 180 people attended the event which was sparked-off by keynote speaker and double gold Olympic medallist sailor and CNN broadcaster Shirley Robertson.

The meeting, which comes after The Lonely Planet selected the Highlands and Islands amongst its Best in Travel for 2019 – the only Scottish destinations to be included – carried a clear message: Give tourists what they are looking for: a spot of adventure in the fresh Highland air.

Niche markets like sailing, or whisky and mountain-biking trails were highlighted as strong ideas that could “extend the Scottish welcome and enhance that visitor’s individual experience of the Highlands”.

Graeme Ambrose, chief executive of Visit Inverness Loch Ness who talked about LochNess 360, said all were agreed that maximising the potential of the outdoor and adventure markets is fundamental to a more sustainable Highland tourism industry.”

Other speakers included adventure cyclist Ed Shoote.
