A LEISURE supervisor who head-butted a police officer as he was being removed from a pub has been ordered to pay his victim compensation.

Solicitor Ken Ferguson told Inverness Sheriff Court that William Sayer had been assaulted in the Glenalbyn Bar in the city’s Young Street after which police had arrived and were trying to calm him down.

He said Sayer had a considerable amount to drink with a friend before going to the pub.

“There was an incident in which he was alleged to have been attacked by a patron,” he said. “He was put out and wanted to get back in for his personal belongings .

“Drink was clearly a factor. He was angry he had been assaulted and wanted back in to settle a score.”

Sayer (39), of Ardness Place, Inverness, admitted assaulting the police officer on January 17.

Mr Ferguson said Sayer, a first offender, was thoroughly ashamed of himself and the offence was out of character.

He said he went to the police station afterwards and apologised to the officer and shook his hand.

Sheriff David Sutherland fined Sayer £300 and ordered him to pay the officer £200.
