A pensioner has been banned from driving for a year after being found drunk behind the wheel in an Inverness car park.

Michael Quigley (71) was found by ambulance staff in Rose Street retail park on the night of September 3 last year, Inverness Sheriff Court was told.

Quigley, of Ripon Road, Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent, had been helping a friend carry out deliveries in Scotland on the day in question.

He admitted the charge of being drunk while in charge of a vehicle.

The court heard when police attended they found him under the influence of alcohol although the car engine was cold to the touch.

A test found him to have 63 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit being 22 microgrammes.

Defence agent Kevin Hughes said although he was not drink driving that it was his client's intention to drive home the following day.

Sheriff Sara Matheson imposed a fine of £198 and disqualified Quigley from driving for 12 months.
