A nursery has met two out of three requirements for improvement set by inspectors according to a new report.

Ardersier Primary School Nursery received a follow up inspection by the Care Inspectorate at the beginning of October and their report has since been published.

During their visit they spoke with children as well as three members of staff and the management team, observing practice and reviewing documents.

In the wake of a previous inspection the nursery had been asked to ensure children were safe during mealtimes, making changes to staff deployment over the lunch period to ensure this was the case.

The latest report stated: “The management team had reviewed staffing and staff now took their breaks before and after the children’s lunchtime.

“This meant that appropriate numbers of staff were available to support children to have a safe mealtime experience.”

The nursery has also been required to ensure children “are safe and receive high quality experiences”, ensuring that suitably qualified and competent staff are working in the nursery “in such number as are appropriate for the health, welfare and safety of children”.

Inspector said of their latest visit: “There was sufficient staffing in place to meet the needs of children.

“The staff team had undergone some changes since the last inspection. However, we found that staff knew the children and their routines well. This meant that children received responsive and compassionate care.”

The nursery manager had also been required to develop and implement an effective system of quality assurance.

Inspectors noted that the management team had made “significant progress” in this area but said they were unable to “fully assess” the impact of quality assurance and self evaluation processes on this occasion.

It was agreed to extend the deadline for this requirement which must now be met by January 27.

“We will follow up on this requirement at the next inspection,” they said.

The previous inspection report had outlined six areas of improvement – however two were not met on this occasion and will be reassessed on the next visit.

Ardersier Primary School Nursery is registered to provide a care service to a maximum of 30 children, from the age of three years to those not yet attending primary school.

The nursery is operated by Highland Council and operates during term times only.
