A SECTION of a popular scenic route in Wester Ross has been washed away due to adverse weather conditions.

Part of the sea defence retaining wall on was damaged by high tide and strong winds brought by Storm Brendan last night in Applecross on the North Coast 500 leading to the village just across the River Applecross.

A Highland Council spokesperson said: "The road is not closed and work to provide a temporary by-pass is underway in order for the route to remain open will a temporary repair to the sea defence is made. Although the road is open, drivers should allow extra time and expect short delays."

They eventually tweeted: "The road is open and work to provide a temporary by-pass is underway in order for the route to remain open to allow for a temporary repair to be made. Drivers should however expect short delays."

At around 10am the Applecross Inn owner posted on Facebook about the condition of the road: "ALERT the road at the head of Applecross Bay is washing away. Bealach passable with care, I am away today so limited updates call the Inn if planning a visit."

Meanwhile, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has warned of flood risks on east and west Highland shores on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

A number of flood alerts and higher scale flood warnings remained in place on Tuesday afternoon.

A spokesman said: "A combination of higher than usual tides and prevailing weather conditions means that flooding from the sea is expected to affect low lying land, roads and properties.

"Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property.

"Advice and information is also available through Floodline on 0345 9881188.

"If you haven't already signed up to receive free flood messages, please call Floodline or register online at sepa.org.uk/floodingsignup."
