The coronavirus outbreak may have prevented the Highlands and Islands’ renewables sector from gathering in person this month, but it will not halt celebrations of this year’s Scottish Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Conference (SHREC).

The full SHREC and the Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Awards which follow it will now be held on September 24 at the Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness.

However, keep the original date of April 30 in the diary as SHREC goes digital by bringing the views of its expert renewables speakers, including Scotland’s minister for energy, connectivity and the islands, Paul Wheelhouse, straight to your inbox.

Also speaking will be Harper Macleod’s head of energy and natural resources David Bone, HIE director of energy and low carbon Audrey MacIver, and George Baxter, director of development at Green Power International.

There will also be a panel discussion with Proterra Energy co-founder Terry Stebbings and Ryan Felber, the local implementation adviser at Resource Efficient Scotland, hosted by broadcaster and writer Nicky Marr.

Mr Bone said: “Taking a prompt decision to postpone the event was the only responsible course of action but it also gave us time to come up with an alternative way of delivering SHREC on the day it should have gone ahead.

“We are delighted that, with our friends Highland News and Media, we will be able to provide the SHREC audience with some great content.”

Along with the themes of climate change and the benefits of renewable energy, speakers are expected to comment on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on the sector.

Entertaining awards event will be worth the wait for sector

Nominees and guests for the second Highlands and Islands Energy Awards might have a little longer to wait for this highlight of the renewables sector calendar, but they have much to look forward to when it comes.

Both entertainment sponsor security specialist SecuriGroup and drinks sponsor Ross-shire-based Bubble & Goose Bars and Hospitality are helping ensure those attending the awards will have some top-class live entertainment to enjoy, and be greeted with a welcoming drink when the event comes to the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness on its new date of Thursday, September 24.

SecuriGroup managing director Russel Kerr said: “SecuriGroup is proud to support the Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Awards as it recognises businesses at the forefront of wind, wave, hydro, biomass and solar technologies.”

Some 200 guests are expected to attend the black-tie event, which includes a three-course meal, and is organised by Highland News and Media as part of Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Day alongside the earlier Scottish Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Conference (SHREC).

The new date, postponed from the end of this month because of the coronavirus crisis, has also allowed award candidates extra time to make their applications, with a new deadline of August 15.
