Despite not having a date, the general election is well underway in the Highlands as one of the north’s most prominent MPs – the SNP’s Drew Hendry – set to host a fundraising evening with Nicola Sturgeon next month.

Tickets for the event will cost £15 per person and it is understood that the event featuring the former First Minister of Scotland and currently backbench MSP will only be open to SNP members.

The event comes at a tricky time for both the SNP and Ms Sturgeon. The party has been deluged in controversy over everything from the new Hate Crime Act to its response to the Cass Report.

And then Ms Sturgeon’s husband Peter Murrell was rearrested and charged with embezzlement as part of the lengthy Branchform investigation into SNP finances.

But Mr Hendry will be hoping not just to generate some campaign cash but also to fire up the SNP faithful that have proved so vital in previous elections when it comes to door-knowing voters.

The event is due to take place at the Chieftain Hotel on May 10.
