NHS Highland has responded to recent reports elsewhere of shortages of antibiotics during ongoing cases of Strep A.

In one report an Inverness mum allegedly spent hours driving to eight pharmacies across the city before finding antibiotics for her five-year-old son with suspected Strep A infection.

A spokesman said: "NHS Highland understands that the report relates to last week. Since then guidance has been issued to GPs and community pharmacists to support them in choosing suitable antibiotics and formulations eg liquid, tablet or capsule.

"There is overall a good supply of antibiotics locally, but there will have been occasions where it has been difficult for people to find them in the past and it is a changing picture which can vary by locality.

"We have been working to ensure that the appropriate antibiotics will be available when needed. Work is being undertaken at a national level to improve antibiotic availability."
