The newsgroup, which runs local newspapers including The Inverness Courier, chose the charity as its charity partner of the year.

Staff hosted a range of events including a coffee morning and charity football match against the local police.

Senior relationship fundraising manager for Macmillan, Shirlie Geddes said: “We were delighted when Darrel and the team at Highland News and Media chose us as their Charity of the Year.

“The money they’ve raised will help Macmillan to do whatever it takes to support people living with cancer. £5000 could provide as many as 14 Macmillan grants to help people with cancer, and their families, cope with the additional costs that a cancer diagnosis can bring so we are very grateful for the generosity of the staff at Highland News and Media.”

Darrel Paterson, HNM business development manager said: “At Highland News and Media we are passionate about the communities we serve across the north of Scotland, providing current and trusted news content.

“We asked our employees to nominate charities that they thought we should support as a company and from the shortlist asked them to vote again for who would be selected as our Charity of the Year.

“The vote was unanimous for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“Over the last year, our teams across the north of Scotland have been working hard to fundraise for Macmillan, holding coffee mornings, football matches, sweepstakes in the offices, and hosting a cheese and wine night, and we are thrilled that we exceeded the target we set ourselves of £5000. This money will mean so much for Macmillan and will pay for a Macmillan Nurse for 161 hours, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.

“I would personally like to thank all the employees who worked hard to get us to this amount, and to our customers and readers for getting involved and supporting the various events we held.”
