VULNERABLE pedestrians and cyclists are the focus of a Scotland-wide police scheme to boost safety.

Officers with the Dingwall-based road policing unit began a week of activity with the first use in the region of an initiative specifically aimed at cyclists.

“Operation Close Pass” involves the use of a specially designed mat showing how much space cyclists should have when being overtaken.

Sergeant Donnie Mackinnon said: “Cyclists are vulnerable and it’s important that drivers recognise the importance of giving them space. We were pleased with the response and will be carrying out further awareness events – with enforcement action, when needed.

“With the darker nights and winter weather, it’s important that everyone is aware of the risks associated with using our roads, whether you use them as a motorist or with any other mode of transport.

“Pedestrians and cyclists have the same rights to use the roads as drivers and it’s important for all groups to follow good practice to prevent collisions and keep people safe.

“I would encourage all road users to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others, and to travel responsibly.”
