A Highland mental health charity has held its first meeting in Nairn.

James Support Group was set up by Patrick and Wendy Mullery, from Cromarty, after their son died from suicide.

They wanted to help others affected by suicide and held regular meetings in the Highland capital but now have plans to expand into other areas.

It became a registered charity last year and organisers are hoping to cover a wider area – as well as Nairn, they aim to cover Thurso and Aviemore.

Mr Mullery said: “Nairn Community Centre is a great place to hold our meetings. It is a good spacious and bright room which was just perfect.

“A good number of people attended, and the conversation flowed very well. We spoke about why we were there – suicide.

“Some of us are bereaved by suicide, others have or had suicidal thoughts. This meeting was the first for Nairn, which has recently seen far too many suicides for such a community.

“By bringing the meeting to Nairn, we are making accessing support a little easier, and meeting for the first time some who we had previously supported via Zoom because of the lockdown restrictions.

“We have booked our next meeting at the community centre for Wednesday, December 15, from 6pm-7.45pm. The meetings are free and refreshments are provided.”

The group operates a 24/7 Helpline – 07563 572471 – and, as well as monthly meetings, it offers one-to-one sessions in person or via Zoom.
