A FRESH yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has come into force across the Highlands.

The Met Office warning, which applies to all of mainland Scotland, as well as Skye and also parts of the Outer Hebrides, came into effect at 11am and will remain in force until 10pm tonight (Tuesday).

The warning comes just a day after a series of heavy showers and thundery weather struck in Inverness-shire, Ross-shire and elsewhere.

A further yellow warning for thunderstorms will also come into effect at midnight tonight and run until 10pm on Wednesday. That warning only applies to the Moray Firth area as far north as Wick, and inland to the south as far as the southern end of Loch Ness. The warning also extends as far west as the A835 Braemore junction in Ross-shire and halfway along Loch Shin in Sutherland.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms [could] bring some disruption.

"Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures."
