A NEW medical director has been appointed for NHS Highland.

Dr Boyd Peters, who has the held post on an interim basis since April, was previously the board’s associate medical director for mental health and worked as a GP in Grantown for more than 25 years.

He was also NHS Highland’s clinical lead for the redesign of health and social care services in Badenoch and Strathspey, which includes the construction of the new Badenoch and Strathspey Community Hospital.

Dr Peters will attend board meetings and provide clinical advice to the NHS Highland board.

He said: “I’m delighted to take on this important role. As we deal with the challenges ahead of us I will do everything I can to ensure that clinical leadership will play a key part in reshaping our services.

"Having worked in the Highlands for 28 years I know just how dedicated and committed our clinical teams are and I look forward to working with them and supporting them in all that they do.”

NHS Highland chief executive Iain Stewart said: “I am delighted to announce Boyd’s appointment.

"I have come to know Boyd well during his time as interim medical director and I have every confidence that our medical leadership will be in safe hands. He is an exceptional individual with a rigorous approach to improving the quality of care that we deliver.”

Dr Peters takes up the post with immediate effect.
