Lidl is carrying out a community consultation for plans to build a new supermarket near Inshes roundabout.

A supermarket chain planning to build a new store in Inverness says it will retain as much of the existing landscaping as possible.

Lidl recently revealed plans for a new food store close to Inshes roundabout which is the subject of an ongoing public consultation on proposals designed to improve traffic congestion on the roundabout itself and in surrounding roads.

It would form part of a mixed-use development including affordable homes on a site in Sir Walter Scott Drive historically used for agriculture.

But the proposals have prompted anger and concerns among local residents who fear it will generate additional traffic and also lead to the loss of green space.

As part of an ongoing public consultation, Lidl has held two online events and is also inviting people to submit their views.

A Lidl spokeswoman said the site has been allocated for development by Highland Council for a number of years – in the current local development plan – and, as such, it did not form part of the existing open space or Drakies Park.

“We plan to retain as much of the landscaping and trees as possible in our development proposals,” she said. “We are aware that the council are proposing road improvement works to redesign the Inshes ‘corridor’ but these plans are not connected in any way to the Lidl proposal.

“Our plans, if approved, will create up to 40 new jobs for the local community and represent a multimillion-pound investment.”

She thanked everyone who attended the online consultations.

“It was wonderful to share our plans with the local community and gain helpful feedback from residents,” she said.
