A major housing development is being proposed for the south of Inverness.

The plans are currently at a very early stage but, if approved, it could see more than 1000 new homes built at Druid Temple Farm and Welltown of Leys, near Milton of Leys.

In addition the developer Tulloch Homes would include additional infrastructure – such as shops and a new primary school – as well as green spaces.

There will be an online consultation over the plans later this month and Sandy Grant, Tulloch Homes managing director, said: “We are pleased to have submitted a proposal of application notice for new homes at Druid Temple Farm and Welltown of Leys.

“Inverness is one of Scotland’s fastest growing cities and the site at Druid Temple and Welltown would help meet the increasing housing demand in the area, offering families an attractive and well-connected place to call home.

“Tulloch Homes has decades of experience delivering quality new neighbourhoods in the Highlands and we are delighted to be promoting such a fantastic location. I’d encourage families living nearby, as well as home buyers looking to put down roots in the area, to engage with us at this early stage to help further shape the designs."

The development has the potential for around 1200 homes, including much needed affordable properties, and, as the plans progress, Mr Grant said they hoped to include business opportunities for local shops and cafes. It is understood that walking and cycle routes will be included throughout the new development.

Mr Grant said: “The construction would provide additional jobs as well as opportunities for trades and suppliers, offering a great boost to the local economy.

“We’re hosting an online consultation with members of the project team on hand to answer questions and talk through our proposals. We actively encourage the local community to join us for this virtual event where they will have the opportunity to view and inform our plans."

The first consultation event will be on Wednesday, April 20, between 4pm and 7pm. More information about the plans are available online at the Tulloch Homes website.

However, the proposal could attract strong opposition because Highland Council has identified the area as a non-preferred site in its current local development plan.

Councillor Ken Gowans, who represents Highland Council's Inverness South ward, said this would make any application difficult for the developer and that the speed of development of housing in the area had not been matched by new infrastructure.

He added: "If this goes ahead it is an enormous development. There is no indication so far of any improvements to the general infrastructure."
