The Food Assembly got off to a good start.

FOOD lovers got hold of local produce in a new way last week, with the launch of Inverness’s first ‘click and collect’ farmers’ market.

Inverness Food Assembly launched on Friday at Fairways golf course, Castleheather where consumers picked up goods ordered online throughout the week.

Producers taking part included Black Isle Veg Boxes; Highland Drovers and Borland Farm; and The Really Garlicky Company.

Local farmer Richard Jones said the initiative offers “the best of both worlds”, giving easier access to local food and improving connections between farmers and consumers.

Food Assemblies started in Europe before spreading to the UK, and if the Inverness initiative is successful it could spread across the Highlands.

“Farmers, growers and their customers are in a win-win situation, with 86 per cent of the sale value going back to the producers and customers knowing exactly who they are buying from and where their food has been produced,” said Mr Jones.
