Participants to a leadership programme have launched an initiative to explore young women’s experiences of social isolation and loneliness in the Highlands.

Young women from across the Highland Council's region are being encouraged to take part to a project run by the Young Women Lead Highland cohort this month.

The group are collecting creative submissions from women and people of marginalised genders under the age of 30, to answer the question: What does social isolation mean to you?

The Young Women Lead is a leadership programme for women and non-binary people aged 16 – 30 years old, which provides young people with free training opportunities with the aim to help them engage with local democracy and tackle local issues.

A YWL spokesperson said: "Responses to the question can be in whatever format the individual would like e.g. drawings, voice notes or text. All forms of expressions are valid and welcomed!

"The responses will be collated in a document which will offer insight and recommendations to support young women in rural areas."

Submissions are open to anyone who fits these criteria:

  • A woman or person of marginalised gender;
  • Who currently lives or has lived in the Highland Council region;
  • Is under the age of 30

Anyone under 16 should speak with a trusted adult about submitting on their behalf and can do so by writing to Lou Chauvin at lou@youngwomenscot.org

The submission deadline is on Monday, September 25 and can be accessed via the dedicated typeform link.
