PLANS to install a new footbridge with lifts at the train station in Nairn to replace the existing one have been submitted by a railway infrastructure operator.

Network Rail are applying to start works on the new development as part of a wider strategy set out by Transport Scotland to improve accessibility of Scotland’s railway stations.

The current footbridge in has been formerly criticised for not having a step-free access, making it difficult for persons with reduced mobility to move readily between the station platforms.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "The installation of a new footbridge with lifts will particularly benefit persons of reduced mobility as well as people with children, heavy luggage or shopping, and elderly people."

The plans being proposed would see the new footbridge – a Taziker ‘Legacy Vision – installed to the east of the existing station building and facilities.

According to Network Rail, the existing footbridge structure is incapable of alteration to meet modern requirements and would therefore be a redundant structure, therefore the requirement of creating a new footbridge.

They said the proposals have been considered within the context of the cultural significance of the listing and planning and heritage policy.
