A series of Nazi symbols were found near a popular river walk in Nairn yesterday morning.

The graffiti is located along the path near Nairn churchyard and Riverside park – with some sprayed on one side of the railway bridge over the River Nairn.

They included swastikas and other Nazi and white supremacist symbols which were reported to police – as well as one involving antisemitic wording too offensive to repeat.

This is the third time since November 2023 that offensive graffiti in the town has been reported to police, and investigations are ongoing.

Chief Inspector Ross McCartney said: “We have had additional patrols in the area and enquiries are ongoing into all three incidents.

"All forms of hate crime are unacceptable, we would urge any witnesses or anyone with any information that may assist police enquiries to call Police Scotland on 101."

Local pensioner David Robinson came across the graffiti while walking along the path – a route he takes multiple times a week.

He said: "I had not been on that road since Sunday, and when I went on my usual walk on Thursday they were there.

"I was shocked to see them in Nairn, and it made me feel very upset, surprised and angry."

Mr Robinson, who has been living in Nairn for three years, said this is "deeply concerning".

A former youth and community worker, he shared his concerns that this might be related to some form of youth indoctrination.

"I really hope this is just someone trying to stand out maybe, that it is an isolated incident and not something more sinister."

Nairn Provost Laurie Fraser said: "It is very disappointing, particularly as in this day and age.

"It means we will now have to paint and clear it up.

"If anybody has information on who might have been, please get in touch with police."
