A Nairn man caught with 199 indecent images of children has been spared jail.

Ryan Davis (41) previously admitted the charge of taking or permitting to be taken or making indecent images of children between January 1 2021 and February 2 2022.

He also pled guilty to a charge of possessing the images between January 17 2022 and February 9 2022 when he appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court.

The court heard the images were rated category C - with the most severe— category being A.

Police were tipped off about the material and carried out a raid in February last year at his Burnside home where officers seized a laptop and hard drive.

Defence agent Mike Chapman said his client accepted full responsibility for accessing the images.

Mr Chapman added: "The offences were committed when Mr Davis was struggling with his mental health."

Sentence had been deferred for the preparation of background reports.

Social workers deemed him as being of a "low risk" of re-offending.

Sheriff Robert Frazer imposed a community payback order as a direct alternative to custody.

Davis will be under the supervision of social workers for two years and must carry out 180 hours of unpaid work in the community.

He was also put on the sex offenders register and subject to notification requirements.
