LAND in Nairn can be used as a seating area and an extension for an established kiosk after councillors approved the move.

Members of Highland Council’s Nairnshire area committee discussed land covering a total area of 178 sq m at West Links in Marine Road.

A report also proposed using an additional 40.5 sq m of public land, next to the kiosk, to also be used for seating.

The kiosk and an area of surrounding land is currently leased to James’s Limited until 2029 for the retail purposes.

The tenant approached the council with a request to consider granting a long-lease extension of 30 years (until 2052) and also seeking the additional area of land.

It is a Common Good asset and was subject to a public consultation.

Councillor Michael Green said the café was “a real asset to Nairn”.

Councillor Paul Oldham said: “We should be encouraging him – he’s bringing good business into the town.”

And Councillor Barbara Jarvie felt it was an excellent business and the move could boost business during the winter period but added: “The 30 year period is quite long.”

Nairn Provost Laurie Fraser said he had no objection.

Members decided that they were supportive of the proposal.
