A severely disabled Nairn County fan is set to play a significant part in his club’s community fundraising campaign this Christmas.

Alexander Sherret’s condition means he requires the use of a wheelchair and endures difficulties in communication.

None of that will prevent the plucky Nairn man pitching in to his favourite club’s County at Christmas campaign

Launched this week, the fundraising drive through a series of events will seek to raise £1000 to be spent within Nairn businesses, offering the local economy a timely festive boost amid the pandemic.

The money will buy small gifts and food parcels for vulnerable people and families facing hardship this Christmas. Nairn will also be making a donation to local mental health charities, including Mikeysline, whose logo already takes pride of place on club strips.

Mr Sherret, with the help of parents Fiona and Brian, will embark on a sponsored journey of just over 19.14 miles – a nod to County's 1914 date of birth – in his wheelchair, purely by skirting the circumference of Nairn’s Station Park.

Nairn club secretary Ian Finlayson said: “The centrepiece of our campaign will be ‘Alexander’s Journey’.

“Alexander is a local man with a severe health condition but he and his parents have been great Nairn County supporters for many years.

“Alexander has volunteered to take on the challenge from December 4 to 6 to raise money for this community campaign and will be supported by his family, friends and by the Nairn County family.

“It will take place behind closed doors, observing all Covid-19 Protocols.”

Other fundraisers will include a Christmas-themed quiz, the sale of festive merchandise and an online `QuizFest` hosted by Mr Finlayson on November 26.

The Wee County will publish a list of local deals and offers from businesses on their social media channels.

Mr Finlayson added: “We hope that by undertaking this short fundraiser, with the help of Alexander, Fiona and Brian, we will make a challenging Christmas that bit easier for those in our community.”
